PROBLEM/TREATMENT
.
The therapies I offer can be used on a huge variety of problems, so rather than
try and list every condition, I will give a more general indication of the
sorts of conditions and the most appropriate treatments. By looking around this
web site you will get a good idea which therapy will be right for you
·
Most
psychological conditions can be treated by a range of different therapies.
·
Generally
for issues to do with basic attitudes and feelings about yourself or your
world, Psychotherapy is appropriate.
·
For
issues which are to do with current problems where you need to find a new way
forward, then Counselling is usually appropriate.
·
Where
the problem concerns troublesome symptoms, then Hypnotherapy is often most
appropriate.
·
Many
problems in current relationships can often be resolved surprisingly easily. In
Counselling, simply by looking at the situation afresh through someone else's
eyes, you will often find new avenues to explore.
·
Divorce,
bereavement and relationship breakdown are an ever present part of life. Often,
it is the very person we would have turned to, who has gone. Maybe those around
you are equally overwhelmed and unable to give the support needed at this
especially difficult time. A few sessions of counselling, to find there is
someone who can listen, and where you can really let out your feelings, can
often be a great help.
·
Where
you find yourself repeatedly getting into the same situations in relationships;
when you feel it is something about you or what you are doing, then
Psychotherapy, to explore these deeper feelings about yourself, is usually most
productive. However, all my experience has shown me that very often, the
person who comes to see me saying that they are the problem, often only has one
problem - they are taking too much responsibility for the much greater problems
in those around them. This then becomes the focus of the Therapy and is often
easily resolved.
·
Children,
and trying to be an adequate parent, can become an all consuming issue if you
feel things are going wrong. I often see parents for just a couple of sessions
of Counselling, to help them find a new way of helping their children.
Generally I don't see children, as I believe it is far more productive to
enable the parent to sort out the problem.
·
Relationships
with family members is without doubt the most common problem any therapist
deals with. Other relationships we choose or can usually leave. We are stuck
with our family.
·
In life
we grow and change, then as adults or parents ourselves, as we re-evaluate our
attitude to childcare and parenting, there is huge scope for conflict.
·
Sometimes
just a few sessions of counselling, to get an impartial review of the situation
as you now see it through your adult eyes, can reassure you in your adult
beliefs and make a big difference.
·
For
some people, usually from more caring families, it can feel more difficult to
question the way things were and allow yourself to do things differently. In
this situation Psychotherapy is the ideal therapy.
·
Where
there is any suspicion of real physical illness, it is essential that you do
consult your Doctor, so that your Doctor can rule out or offer treatment for
the physical causes.
·
Hypnotherapy
has an excellent record working with the whole range of physical problems which
are recognized as having a psychological / stress component. For example,
eczema, asthma, psoriasis, migraines,
·
Once
illness is ruled out, or being treated, then psychological therapies can have a
big role in helping a wide range of physical symptoms.
·
Many
of the obviously stress-related symptoms can be tackled by resolving the
underlying causes of stress or by finding new strategies to deal with the
stress. In the former case, Counselling would usually be the appropriate therapy
to sort out the causes while in the latter Hypnotherapy can help you deal with
the stress more easily.
·
Where the symptom itself
has become an added stress in life, then often Hypnotherapy, which directly
tackles the symptom, can significantly reduce the overall stress. This is
especially true for Anxiety attacks and other obvious symptoms of stress.
·
Although
clearly "psychological", there is also the group of problems
which manifest themselves in behaving in ways which cause problems.
·
This
would include obsessional behaviour, addictions, and habits which have got out
of control.
·
Generally
for problem habits and addictions such as smoking or mild drinking problems,
Hypnotherapy is a very powerful treatment.
·
Obsessional
behaviour covers a very broad range. Most people experience this some times to
some degree. It is when the obsession begins to interfere with life, that
it needs resolving.
·
When
the obsession is mild, Hypnotherapy can be very effective. When it is a long
term pattern that is seriously affecting your life, then Psychotherapy would be
appropriate. In the middle range, counselling, maybe combined with Hypnosis,
can be very effective.
·
Although
part of the above groups, Eating Disorders are so common that they need a
special mention.
·
I
distinguish Anorexia as a very specific condition. Once it is established and
there is clearly an unhealthy weight loss together with a problem getting back
to eating, this needs specialist treatment with far greater support and help
than Private Practice can offer.
·
For
the whole range of other eating problems there is much on offer. I have treated
Bulimia with Hypnosis to great effect. Sometimes where it is more muddled and
to do with self image, then Counselling or Psychotherapy is more appropriate.
·
For binge eating, resulting
from the muddle after endless diets and feeling deprived, the Hypnosis-based
Weight Loss programme can be very effective.
·
Where
the problem is simply an "addiction" to certain food, usually
chocolate, I would strongly recommend Hypnosis. This can often be
remarkably effective.
